2016 Nissan Altima
With the mid-size sedan market getting more competitive each year, every automaker is setting out to come up with new ways to gain an advantage over their competition.
The new Altima gets a sporty new style redesign, some luxury-oriented interior finishes, and a couple of trim options that put it above and beyond what other automakers have been putting out with their mid-size creations.
Powertrains and Performance
The 2016 Altima sees two engine options available this time around. Buyers can pick from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that gets a respectable 182-hp, or a beefier 3.5-liter V-6 that spins out 270-hp. Both are available solely with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that manages to provide some heft that a natural automatic transmission like a CVT is sometimes lacking.
Interior Designs and Features
Nissan opted for new fascia and headlights this time around, and decided to reshape the hood and fenders as well. It's an extension of the brand's redesign philosophy that can be readily seen in the new designs of the latest Maxima and Murano. This design concept is opting to push the excitement and sport car angle while not sacrificing the safety and reliability of a family or midsize sedan. It's a clear indication of Nissan's target audience - younger with an eye towards freshness - that Nissan is hoping to snag. The 2016 Altima features a prominent, V-shaped grille and boomerang-shaped headlights, a leaner nose, and the SR sport edition sees bigger wheels and a lower stance.
Handling
The 2016 Altima SR sport edition is really the shining star in the 2016 Altima trim stable. It rides on an independent suspension, with Sachs shocks for better ride control and smoother all around feel. Nissan installed better, new shocks, springs, and bushings, for better handling, and offers new tires on all models. The 2016 Altima SR can be equipped with either the four- or six-cylinder engine according to the driver's preference, and gets thicker stabilizer bars and stiffer dampers.Â
Ultimately, the 2016 Altima drives the way it looks: a combination of a quick and sporty ride that relies on comfort and stability when it comes to ferrying its passengers. The new design aesthetic Nissan has created across all models of its roster is a big leap and they took a gamble that the sporty nature of their cars would strike a chord with potential buyers. But it's a strategy that's certainly paying off.Â
